The world has made great strides in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic. Over 13 billion vaccine doses have been administered globally, leading to significant reductions in severe illness and death. The situation is much improved compared to a year ago, but efforts must continue to ensure widespread immunity and limit new variants. The U.S. plans to end the COVID emergency in May, and the FDA proposes making the vaccine an annual shot like the flu. With continued vigilance and vaccine access, the world is optimistic about reducing COVID's impact and transitioning to a new phase.
